What this tool does
It lines up the 5-generation pedigrees of two or more rodeo or futurity horses and lists every ancestor they have in common, showing exactly where that ancestor sits in each pedigree.
1. Find horses
- Type part of a horse's show name or registered name into the search box. Matching horses appear underneath; click one to add it. Pressing Enter adds the first match.
- Capitals, spacing and punctuation are ignored, so
smoothtalkin finds Smooth Talkin.
- Use the drop-down beside the box to limit the search to one discipline (Heading, Heeling, Barrel Racingβ¦), or to Futurity only / Rodeo only. Choosing a discipline lists every horse in it; choosing All disciplines, or clicking in the empty search box, lists every horse. Press Esc to close the list.
- Each result shows foaling year, sex, sire and dam, so horses with similar names can be told apart. Names in red are Thoroughbreds.
- Or paste a list: open "Or paste a list of names", put one name per line, and click Add pasted names. Names that can't be found, or that belong to more than one horse, are listed for you to check.
2. Manage the selection
- Selected horses appear as tags with their discipline. A brown Fut marks a futurity horse. Click the red β to remove one.
- πΎ Save Horse List downloads the selection as
qh_compare_list.csv.
- π Load Saved List brings back a saved list. It also accepts a comparison CSV downloaded from this page, or any plain text file with one name per line. Loaded horses are added to those already selected.
- Clear all starts over: it removes the selected horses and the comparison results, and empties the search box, discipline filter and paste box.
3. Compare
- Choose how many generations to compare (1 = parents only, 5 = full pedigree), then click Compare Pedigrees. At least two horses are needed.
- The summary boxes show how many ancestors are Common to All, how many are Shared by Some, and a Similarity Index (ancestors common to all as a percentage of the average number of ancestors per pedigree).
- The horses table lists each horse with sire, dam and dam sire. Click a name to open its full pedigree in a new tab. On record shows how many pedigree positions are filled; orange means some are blank, which can hide shared ancestors.
Reading the shared-ancestors table
- One row per ancestor, one column per horse. Green rows are in every pedigree. A blank cell means that horse doesn't carry the ancestor within the generations compared.
- Positions are paths from the horse: S = sire, D = dam, read left to right.
S is the sire, DS the dam's sire (broodmare sire), SDS the sire's dam's sire. The number of letters is the generation.
- Γ2, Γ3 means the ancestor appears more than once in that horse β linebreeding.
- Sex: s = found in a sire position, d = dam position.
- xx marks a Thoroughbred ancestor.
- Dosage (when dosage.csv is available): Speed Classic Cowhorse.
- Use Show to view ancestors in 2 or more pedigrees, in every pedigree, or all ancestors. Use Sort to order by most shared, closest generation, or name.
Same name, different horse: an ancestor is matched by name, by whether it is in a sire or dam position, and by its own recorded sire. Two different mares with the same name are kept apart, and the row shows "by sire" so you can tell them apart. In generation 5 the sire isn't recorded, so an unidentified mare there is never assumed to be the same mare found elsewhere.
Downloading results
- Download CSV saves every ancestor shared by two or more horses, whatever the Show setting, as
qYYYYMMDD.csv (with _g3 etc. added when fewer than 5 generations were compared). It opens in Excel, and it can be reloaded later with Load Saved List to bring the same horses back.
Sharing a comparison
Add the horse names to the page address, separated by |:
qh_pedigree_compare.html?horses=Horse One|Horse Two|Horse Three
The horses are selected automatically when the page opens; then click Compare.
Disciplines
A rodeo horse's event comes from its discipline field; a futurity horse's event comes from its champion field, and the horse is tagged Fut. The grey line at the top of the page shows how many horses were read from each field.
Press Esc or click outside this box to close it.
