âšī¸ Rodeo Dosage Analysis - Help & Information
What is Dosage Analysis?
Dosage analysis evaluates a horse's pedigree to determine the genetic influence of three breeding types: Speed, Classic, and Cowhorse. This helps identify which disciplines a horse's bloodlines are best suited for.
Required Files
- pedbig.csv: Pedigree database with horse names and ancestry. Uses the
discipline field to identify event type.
- dosage.csv: Contains sire names and their dosage indicator. Columns:
name, indic (s=Speed, m=Classic, c=Cowhorse).
Discipline Codes (from pedbig.csv)
| Code | Discipline | Typical Dosage |
| f | Heading | Mixed (Cowhorse + Speed) |
| r | Heeling | Cowhorse dominant |
| c | Tiedown Roping | Cowhorse dominant |
| n | Breakaway Roping | Cowhorse dominant |
| w | Steer Wrestling | Speed dominant |
| b | Barrel Racing | Speed dominant |
How Dosage is Calculated
Each ancestor in the pedigree is checked against dosage.csv. If found, their dosage type contributes points based on how close they are to the horse (generation weight):
| Generation | Positions | Points |
| 1st (Parents) | Sire, Dam | 16 points each |
| 2nd (Grandparents) | SS, SD, DS, DD | 8 points each |
| 3rd (Great-grandparents) | SA, SB, SC, SX, DA, DB, DC, DX | 4 points each |
| 4th (Great-great-grandparents) | A-H, I-Q | 2 points each |
Dosage Types
- Speed (s): Bloodlines known for quick acceleration and raw speed. Dominant in barrel racing and steer wrestling horses.
- Classic (m): Bloodlines with balanced athleticism, often foundation Quarter Horse lines.
- Cowhorse (c): Bloodlines known for cow sense, quick stops, and agility. Dominant in roping and cutting horses.
Understanding the Results
- Speed/Classic/Cowhorse Columns: Displayed as "count / avg" format. For example, "65 / 6.2" means 65 horses had Speed bloodlines with an average score of 6.2 points.
- Count: Number of horses in that discipline with at least one ancestor of that dosage type.
- Average Score: The mean dosage points for each type across all horses in that discipline.
- Percentages: What portion of total dosage each type represents.
- Dosage Profile Bar: Visual representation of the Speed/Classic/Cowhorse balance.
- Top 5 Horses: Horses with the highest total dosage scores (most ancestors found in dosage.csv).
Key Findings from Rodeo Data
- Speed-Dominant: Barrel Racing (~78% Speed), Steer Wrestling (~69% Speed)
- Cowhorse-Dominant: Breakaway (~75%), Tiedown (~73%), Heeling (~71%), Heading (~43%)
- Heading is unique: The only roping event with significant Speed influence (~29%)
How to Use This Information
Compare your mare or stallion's dosage profile to the typical profile for your target discipline:
- Breeding for roping events? Prioritize Cowhorse bloodlines
- Breeding for barrel racing or steer wrestling? Prioritize Speed bloodlines
- Breeding for heading? Look for a mix of Speed and Cowhorse
Tips
- Files auto-load if hosted on a web server in the same folder
- Export results to CSV for further analysis in Excel
- Add more sires to dosage.csv to improve coverage
